Why should I run cross country?

You can get in great shape. Running is great exercise, and running long distances improves your stamina and energy levels. It helps your heart be stronger and more efficient, and helps you create a healthy lifestyle that will last for years to come.

Running helps prepare you for other sports. After running cross country you are well prepared to play soccer, basketball and other sports.

Everybody gets to run. In Cross Country, nobody gets cut and there is no bench. Everybody runs and does their best. The top runners typically get medals, and the team with the five fastest runners wins the team award.

You can be a part of a winning team. The Bowling Green Elementary, Junior High and Senior High Cross Country teams have a long history of winning, and you can be a part of it. Currently the girls Varsity team is ranked #2 in the state in all classes.

Why should my child run cross country?

They can develop self-esteem. Children develop their feelings about themselves based on what they accomplish. Cross country helps children first of all by including all children on the team. Nobody sits on the bench, and nobody gets cut. Secondly, Cross Country assists children by allowing them to work hard to overcome obstacles and see improvement over the course of a year.

They can grow as an individual. Runners receive individual times and have the opportunity to compete for individual prizes in each race. They are able to see their improved times from one race to another.

They can be a part of a team. In addition to individual performances, Cross Country is unique in that the runners compete as a team as well. While the top five runners comprise the score that determines the final placement, every person’s participation is important.

They can participate in a school sport for little money. Cross country meets don’t charge admission, and aside from a small fee charged at the beginning of the year the only expenses are for a uniform and a good pair of shoes.
